Beyond the Blueprint: Capturing the Journey of Construction, Architecture & Infrastructure Projects

Beyond the Blueprint: Capturing the Journey of Construction, Infrastructure & Building Projects

We often see stunning architecture showcased online – sleek lines, innovative materials and breathtaking interiors. But what about the journey? The months, even years, of meticulous planning and tireless execution that bring these architectural visions to life?

We believe that documenting the construction process is as vital as capturing the finished product. It's about showcasing the dedication, craftsmanship, and innovation that go into every project.

Why construction site photography & videography matters:

  • Building brand trust: By sharing the behind-the-scenes story, you humanize your brand. Your audience gets to see the passion and expertise of your team, building trust and confidence in your work.

  • Showcasing expertise: Construction is a complex process. High-quality documentation demonstrates your technical skills, attention to detail, and ability to overcome challenges.

  • Marketing & sales tool: Compelling visuals can attract potential clients, showcase your portfolio, and differentiate your company from the competition.

  • Internal communication: Construction site footage can be invaluable for training, safety briefings, and project reviews, improving efficiency and collaboration.

  • Environmental & social responsibility: Documenting sustainable practices, such as the use of environmentally friendly concrete at Brisbane Airport, enhances your brand image and appeals to eco-conscious clients.

Our Approach:

We understand the unique challenges of working on construction sites. That's why our team is equipped with the necessary safety gear, including white cards and working at heights certifications, to ensure safe and efficient on-site operations.

We've had the privilege of documenting a wide range of projects, including:

  • Brisbane Airport: Capturing the installation of solar panels and the pouring of environmentally friendly concrete

  • Tomkins: Documenting the progress of their building projects from inception to completion

  • Fulton Hogan: Showcasing the meticulous repaving of airport runways, both day and night

  • On Point Painting: Highlighting their expertise in commercial painting projects

Revitalise Your Brand: A Visual Transformation with health & fitness company NuStrength featuring Kitty Blomfield

"We bloody love these guys! We’ve done multi shoots with them and couldn’t be happier! Our last shoot was the best one yet. Em made us feel so comfortable and even sexy! She’s so great at making it fun and helps with the posing the photos were incredible, can’t recommend Em and Andy enough. Andy even did our wedding."

Loyal clients of LP, esteemed health and fitness figures Kitty Blomfield and Craig McDonald, recently commissioned LP for an extensive photoshoot aimed at revitalising their company NuStrength's online presence. The objective? To curate a compelling visual narrative for their imminent website update and social media platforms. During this two-hour branding session, LP photographed both single and duo set-ups for Kitty and Craig, giving them a range of content over several different settings ranging from the kitchen to various backdrops and lighting setups, all within the LP Studio in Brisbane.

Here we detail some of the techniques and methods LP used to provide exactly what was needed for the entrepreneurial couple to really make their imagery have impact and aligning with their values!

Kitty and Craig pride themselves on helping women transform their bodies through improved metabolic function and strength training. They do this through programs, a podcast and a food tracking app and regularly share their advice through their online platforms, creating a huge following in their clients worldwide. Kitty has been featured on Sunrise, 10, Nine, Women’s Weekly and many other publications for her transformative ways. LP captured imagery that represents their goals, while also presenting a friendly and helpful professional coach giving NuStrength new branding imagery that takes their online presence to the next level.

In all our imagery, we photographed with the end result in mind…. Graphics, text and messages to be displayed on their website and social media. We planned the imagery with negative space and landscape and portrait orientation imagery to align for all platforms.

Throughout the photoshoot, LP photographed Kitty and Craig both separately and together. By representing their easy nature with each other in a fun and cohesive way, we can convey their work as a couple and how that is of greater benefit to clients.

LP photographers are highly experienced in directing and posing our clients for the best possible outcome. See below, where the client wanted imagery that could be worked seamlessly into the website, or be used to bring attention to certain text.

Love Story Atelier Handmade Jewellery: Timeless Product Photography

At LP Commercial Photography, we're more than just photographers; we're storytellers, dedicated to capturing your product as you envision it. In a recent collaboration with Love Story Atelier, an Australian handmade bridal jewellery line, we embarked on a journey to document their products from inception to the final exquisite pieces nestled in their elegant packaging. This case study sheds light on the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication behind each unique creation.

Crafting the Narrative

In our partnership with Love Story, we set out to tell the complete story behind their handmade jewellery. It's not just about the final product; it's about the journey that transforms raw materials into wearable art. We meticulously documented every step, from the initial crafting stages to the final product and its elegant packaging.

Capturing Craftsmanship

Our lens became a silent observer in the workshop, capturing the skillful hands that painstakingly molded and shaped each piece of jewellery. We focused on the intricate details—the delicate twists and turns, the precision of the settings, and the careful selection of gemstones—all of which contribute to the uniqueness of Love Story's creations.

The Exquisite Final Act

But the story didn't end there. We wanted to present these exquisite creations in a way that would resonate with potential customers. Our photographs showcased the jewellery in all its glory, emphasizing its elegance and charm. We aimed to make each piece come to life through our visuals, inviting customers to connect with the essence of these unique creations.

A Tangible Connection

Our commitment to telling the Love Story behind handmade jewellery isn't just about aesthetics; it's about creating a tangible connection. We believe that when customers understand the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into each piece, it becomes more than just jewellery—it becomes a unique story they can wear.

At LP Commercial Photography, we're passionate about transforming your vision into visual narratives that engage and captivate. We're not just capturing products; we're telling stories. Contact us today, and let's embark on a journey to showcase your brand's unique narrative.

The product

A word from the owner:

‘Love Story’ is an Australian based atelier, dedicated to creating exquisite, hand-made jewellery to complement the style and grace of the modern-day woman.

Showcasing the timeless elegance of pearls, our designs effortlessly radiate style and simplicity.

Each piece is made to last, serving as a keepsake that captures the essence of love and celebration.

Whether you envision a simple drop style or a more intricate, cascading design, our collection offers a range of options to complement your personal style.

Alternatively, our bespoke service allows you to collaborate with a designer to create a tangible expression of your love story’

The Craftsmanship

In today's world of consumerism and the often ambiguous origins of products, the power of visual representations to convey the dedication, hard work, and passion invested in the creation process cannot be underestimated. Whether its eco-sourced pearls and gold, or hand-set fittings, customers are yearning for authenticity and a deeper connection to the products they purchase more than ever before.

We provide clients with a transparent and genuine look into the creation process. Our goal is not just to deliver a product but to help our clients offer an experience—an experience that tells their unique story of craftsmanship and individuality.

The Photo Session

Realise your vision, your way.

Creative autonomy from all parties has a transformative impact on product photography. This approach allows for the product to be portrayed in a manner that aligns perfectly with the brand's identity and the photographer's artistic vision.

The result is a product showcase that not only highlights its features but also tells a captivating visual story, engaging the audience on a deeper level and leaving a lasting impression.

The Results

Whatever your product, passion or business, here at LP Commercial we taylor our service to present the best side of your product in the best way.

Photography Coverage of the Tennis Australia and Marriott Hotel’s Partnership

LP Commercial Photography had the honour of capturing the press imagery of Ash Barty playing tennis, on the court, and interacting with young fans for HM Magazine.

See the full HM Magazine article HERE, featuring LP Commercial’s imagery.

Previous women’s tennis world number one, Ash Barty, was appointed ambassador for Marriott hotels during their new partnership with Tennis Australia, as a precursor to the hotel hosting some of the biggest names in tennis for the upcoming tennis season.

LP Photography was contacted to capture a cover for HM magazine as well as a double page spread and other imagery, including lifestyle shots and a visual record of the deal, for the press release.

As Matt Lennon(Dec 8, 2021) states in the HM article, ‘Unique guest experiences and exclusive sporting and cultural partnerships will be underpinned by a solid pipeline of hotel openings in the region’, a big first step being to bring Ash Barty on as ambassador for the upcoming tennis season.

Onsite for these prestigious events, LP worked to curate the most suitable portrait images for the upcoming press release, as well as a mix of vertical and horizontal imagery for the magazine spread.

What a great moment to be involved in.

OUTCOME: Multiple national and international media hits across Australian industry and mainstream newspapers and magazines including online exploitation by media and radio outlets.

WELCOME TO TWO DAYS OF THE BEST OF RADIO

October is an interesting month. For my son it’s all about creating weird fancy dress costumes and getting ready for a ridiculous amount of lollies on Halloween, for some of my friends it’s about bratwurst, schnitzels and too much German beer at Oktoberfest (I’m not mentioning names but you know who you are J). Here at Life Portraits and LP Commercial Photography it’s about prepping for one of our largest event gigs of the year, two days of fast paced, shutter clicking celebrations at the Commercial Radio Conference Radio Alive and the star-studded Australian Commercial Radio Awards.

Photographically what do the ACRAS mean for us? A four person team, nearly 1000 press images processed, captioned, uploaded and delivered to the media as the events are taking place, roughly another 3,000 images processed and delivered electronically to the client for distribution to attendees, sponsors etc within 24 hours of the event closing.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

Event photography isn’t for everyone. Many underestimate what the job entails. It’s not just a case of snapping a few socials then getting a couple of speakers on a stage. Your images have to capture a mood and feeling of the event. You are constantly looking for moments to capture, unscripted as well as scripted, and shooting multiple styles of images for the many audiences a larger event attracts:

There are the fun and interesting shots for attendees to share with their friends and colleagues on social media. Good shots of the speakers and participants that can be gifted to them to use in their profiles and portfolios and online marketing. Images that the client and event organisers can use to market the event to future attendees. Sponsor shots to show that their decision to back the event or have a trade stand there was money well spent and to help the organisers to market to sponsors in future years. And then there are the press shots. Images which have to satisfy both the various local, national and international print and online news hounds while at the same time projecting the image of the event demanded by the client’s public relations specialists.

On larger events there are also the technical difficulties of shooting in multiple and often complicated lighting conditions from natural light to complicate stage lighting, from near darkness to full studio conditions and often jumping between them all at a seconds notice.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

And lastly, there is the issue of how long you have to turn the images round. If there is media interest then images have to be online minutes after being taken.  If press photographers are at the event it is our responsibility to make sure that our pictures hit the newsdesks before other freelance media photographers to give a better chance of the client’s images being used.

Not all events demand all of these things. Many conferences and awards ceremonies are much more about internal distribution of images inside companies or offerings to specialist media with longer lead times of up to a month.

But the Commercial Radio Australia weekend demands it all and while it is a tough weekend, we love it!!!

For me, a former daily press photographer, events like the Radio Alive conference and the ACRAS bring back that adrenaline rush of media work. There is nowhere to hide, your images have to be right first time and there is no re-staging a shot. You either capture the moment or you don’t and all too often not capturing that moment is simply not an option. That pressure drives you to succeed, and that is a brilliant rush.

Commercial Radio Australia is also a dream client to work with. They are loyal to their suppliers which has seen us working on the awards for a number of years now. They were my client a good few years before Emily and I joined forces and created the LP brand. Yes they demand a high level of quality and responsiveness but their team works harder than any of their suppliers to deliver one of Australia’s biggest star-studded awards ceremonies. It is only right that they expect and demand the best from us. That drive in their team also means we know at all times what is expected from us which actually makes delivery easier.

The job itself is actually too big for Emily and I to handle alone. But this is where our policy of working cooperatively with other photographers comes in and allows us to tackle jobs of all sizes. We have a group of people we can call on to work under our brand to help us on large or interstate projects and we in turn return the favour and work under their brand whenever they need.

In this instance we are lucky enough to have two great friends and great photographers join our team, Dan Gray and Simon Harrington, both of whom are highly experienced photographers with years of running their own businesses and delivering for clients.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

This in turn has a fantastic impact for the client as it means every person on our team is highly experienced…. At this year’s ACRAS we had nearly 70 years of combined skills and knowledge in photography and event coverage in play. We don’t fill our numbers by bringing in in-experienced trainees and students we simply put in place the best team we can for each and every event.

So how did we organise this year’s coverage?

Thursday: Dan, Emily and I flew into Melbourne and spent the evening checking gear, ensuring batteries were charged and cameras were time synced and lightroom galleries and captioning were prepared.

Friday 7am: Arrive at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre and we are off, day one, Radio Alive 2018.

Conference day was fast paced but fairly straight forward. Dan and I were on cameras, Emily was stationed in the press room on the laptop processing, captioning and uploading images for the media. Dan and I would regularly swap out of the different conference rooms so at least one of us was always shooting and the other was feeding cards of images back to Emily.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

Emily had the absolutely crucial job of being the lynchpin of our operation during the conference and while we tease her about being a bossy boots the reality is her amazingly organised and direct way of working is always a god send in these situations.

She was the only one seeing all our images so as well as processing our images to make them consistent, selecting the best ones to meet the media and client needs, captioning them and uploading them, she would feed us instructions throughout the day. “We need more candids during networking times”, “we have enough audience shots now concentrate on the speakers”,  “highlights are blowing out a little under that stage lighting knock your exposure back a fraction”, “we’ve had a specific request for a shot of….”, and so it went and all the time she would be processing and captioning and uploading hundreds of images during the day.

This constant flow of feedback then allowed Dan and I to fully concentrate on the moments in the conference rooms and networking areas and keep our eyes peeled for those magic moments.

At 6.30pm we were cameras down and ready to enjoy a couple of after event drinks happy that a good job had been done.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

Saturday morning Simon flew in from Sydney and after a leisurely morning we started to get ready, kit cleaned and prepped, batteries fully charged, images from the previous day backed up and secure, cards cleared and formatted, seven cameras time synced and a pre-event meeting to discuss responsibilities and shooting tactics and we walk ourselves through the evening that is coming, the big one, the Australian Commercial Radio awards.

We arrive at 3pm, two hours to go before the red carpet opens. Dan and Emily set up studio lights around the winners wall to ensure crisp well lit images of all 90 or so award winners as they come off stage. Simon starts taking room set up pictures and images for sponsors etc. I start getting ready for the VIP red carpet images and be on standby should any of the celebrities arrive early so we can get going on the red carpet as fast as possible.

The event kicks off at 5pm. Emily and I are up first. I shoot the red carpet and organise the press photographers as we capture images of the radio stars and their partners, tight shots, face shots, full length gown shots, the works. Most arrive late and at 6pm there is a massive rush to get everything done while I constantly pass images to Emily for her to process, caption and get online for the media.

6pm the event is already underway. Simon is up and working like a trojan capturing the crowds entering and the first performer on stage while I wrap up on the red carpet. 6.15pm and the red carpet is finished. I abandon Emily to the uploads and processing while I head into the main room to cover the stage and crowd for the rest of the night with Simon.

6.30pm Emily has finished processing and uploading around 100 red carpet pictures and is already with Dan at the studio award wall set-up as the first of the award winners are already coming out with their ACRA microphone statue, proudly smiling at their win.

The night disappears in a blur. As Emily and Dan work solidly through the night in a rhythm of winners, images, processing, uploading. Simon and I cover inside as the performers sing their hearts out, Andrew Hansen & Chris Taylor from The Chaser entertain (and roast) the crowd as hosts and some of Australia’s best comedians and radio stars and experts present and receive their awards. Simon and I continually shoot, and he covers me when I put cameras down every now and then to grab the laptop I’ve stashed at the back of the room to offload cards and process and upload suitable media pictures from all the action on stage, adding to Emily’s press pictures from the VIP Red Carpet and Award Wall.

Brisbane Corporate Event Photography | Brisbane Commercial Photography

Despite a full night, 90 awards, three on stage bands and interludes, the amazing team at Commercial Radio Australia finish the event bang on time and by 11pm we are all in the media room wrapping up. I’m putting the last of the inside images online in our press galleries. Emily has amazingly finished getting every award winner picture captioned and online and the press are already picking them up with our images being used by online media that night. Dan is breaking down the equipment and studio and Simon is popping in and out snapping the last of the socials as the final people head to the after-show parties.

We head back to the hotel apartment, order pizzas and swap war stories from the evening in that wonderful post event, fatigue ridden, warm glow in a wonderful moment of camaraderie… then realise we forgot one important thing…. to stock the fridge with beer that morning… Note for next year.

The next day (Sunday) Dan and Simon sleep-in, their ACRA weekend has come to an end and they will return to Sydney at a leisurely pace after relaxing in Melbourne. Emily and I are up and away flying back to Brisbane and by 11am I’m home with 10,000 images to sort through, cull, edit and upload to the client by 9am Monday morning.

I get everything underway and thankfully Emily managed to find time during the conference to process most of those pictures or at least set up editing presets which I can now just copy. That alone saves me a couple of hours. But then disaster strikes, a Brisbane thunderstorm knocks out power and my NBN line keeps failing. I keep working on the laptop until the battery fails. I’ve already phoned round friends to find somewhere I can move my editing suite to if I don’t get power back on but thankfully it’s not required in the end as the power cut only lasts a few hours. By 3am Monday morning the images are sorted, processed and uploading begins. Later that day we send all the images on a hard drive to the client as a second back up to the digital uploads.

In return the client sends us a lovely email and a list of all the national and regional newspapers, magazines and online news outlets that have already downloaded and used our images.

…and with that the ACRAS And Radio Alive are over for another year and we are already starting to look forward to 2019.

Official Event Photographer & Videographer For Headbox: A Major International Player in the Events Industry

Official Event Photographer & Videographer For Headbox: A Major International Player in the Events Industry

One of our great wins this year was becoming the official photographer & videographer for Headbox.

HeadBox has made events easy!  This venue marketplace, with a global client base and an ecosystem of products designed to deliver high quality bookings to venues, they’ve made meetings and event planning hassle-free.

Used by hundreds of corporate clients, HeadBox allows large companies to plan, build, manage and track their entire meetings and events spend in one place. This means you gain access to high-quality, large value corporate enquiries.

When the team enquired about LP Commercial photographing their launch night in Brisbane, we knew we were in for a special night! And the Headbox team delivered. See our launch party video below.

Held at the fantastic Cielo Rooftop bar, there was great music, incredible food and fantastic fire twirlers… an explosive way to break into the Brisbane market.

Event photography is a fantastic part of our business and one we really enjoy. Not only do we get to attend some great events and listen to interesting and varied speakers, photographically its about speed, knowing your equipment, thinking two steps ahead so that when a moment happens, you are there and it’s captured.

Photographing events provides a wonderful adrenalin rush. When shooting lifestyle, architecture or studio work everything is planned and controlled and you create every tiny part of the image, but when photographing events you have to be on the ball every minute of the job ready to capture the unexpected moment, the special glance and, often in difficult lighting situations, be fast enough to capture the image that creates itself in that moment.

Over the next few months as the events industry reopens we look forward to working with Headbox and their clients, capturing the best possible moments at events across Queensland.

Roma Airport Runway Resurfacing Project - Fulton Hogan: Time Lapse Video Project

ROMA AIRPORT RUNWAY RESURFACING PROJECT - Fulton Hogan: Time Lapse Video Project

Some jobs are just special right from the word go.  From the first conversation with the client you know it’s going to be incredible.

Like when a client calls and says: “….so, this runway in a rural Queensland town is getting resurfaced over 30 days or so but all the work has to be done at night and every morning each night’s work has to seamlessly blend with the existing runway so that the airport can re-open and the runway can operate as per normal each day.

So every night we have to scrape off the top layer of a section, flatten it, seal all the cracks, resurface it, roll it smooth, re paint all line markings and then clear the area of all equipment and debris so the first plane of the day can land. Now we need a film that can capture every stage of the process, filmed at night and feature airport operations during the day and be around the 2 minute mark. What do you think….”

What do I think? I think that sounds epic.

WELCOME TO THE ROMA AIRPORT RESURFACING PROJECT

Client: Cross Copywriting representing both Fulton Hogan and Maranoa Regional Council

Brief: Create an approx. 2 min film showing all aspects of the resurfacing work and the importance of the airport to the regional community.

End use: General marketing material and historical record.

Required:  Two trips out to the rural hub of Roma, three-night shifts and two-day shifts (the longest being 18 hours straight), two staff, nine separate cameras including three go pros, 280gb of B-roll footage and 21,000 still frames for time-lapse segments.

Every job presents particular challenges to overcome. The Roma project was particularly interesting. Not only were there the “normal” safety issues of working around some seriously large plant and equipment in constant motion but also the added risks of working around them at night and the technical difficulties of filming and photographing fast moving objects in low light.

During the day our set pieces were relaxed as were shown round the airport by airport manager Ben Stewart and his friendly team. Taking time to work out angles and stage our shots.

The night time job was a completely different story. The Fulton Hogan team were working to incredibly tight deadlines and it was made very politely and equally firmly clear from the start that nothing could be done to interrupt or hold up any work as everyone had a great big clock in their heads counting down the time to the first aircraft coming in to land in the morning…. An operational deadline that could not be held up for anyone.

The answer? Bring loads of cameras and set them up running all round the works area so that at any one time we are filming two or three b-roll pieces, having Go-pros rigged on vehicles capturing driver-eye views of the evening while another three cameras work on static and slider based time-lapse pieces… then throughout the night we run around breaking down and resetting everything for the next set of shots.

For us it was a non-stop, slightly manic job with little down time as the Fulton Hogan team professionally, systematically and efficiently smashed through their work.

But despite all the cameras and gear we had with us, our greatest asset for the job was simply the people we were working with. Namely Philippa Cross of Cross Copywriting whose agency was the central point of contact for managing and matching our work to the desires and needs of the two end clients, Fulton Hogan and Maranoa Regional Council, and of course the attitude of the men and women of the Fulton Hogan and Roma Airport teams.

Yes they were extremely busy and under a great deal of pressure but every one of them was also as helpful as they could be. Ready to assist whenever we needed it and incredibly welcoming to the point that even though we were the interlopers dropping in and buzzing around like annoying mosquitos at a barbeque they instantly made us feel like an integral part of their team. Making a hectic job that much easier.

This job was amazing and memorable in so many ways. Being Brisbane based commercial photographers it’s good to get out and about in regional Queensland. Watching the way the FH team worked liked a well-oiled machine. The incredible logistical challenges of the job for everyone involved and the resulting piece of film that we achieved.

But for me the greatest memories that I take away from this job are the working relationships forged over the project and the wonderfully warm, cohesive team spirit that was shown across the board from everyone involved. Those more than anything else made this job simply epic.

A Modern, Beautiful, Timeless Build with Attention to Detail: Brisbane Architectural Photography with Monster Homes

Monster Homes Display Home Photography Brief

Brisbane Architectural Photography

Project Details & Objectives

LP Commercial Photography was commissioned by Monster Homes to photograph their display home at Newport, outside of Brisbane, capturing the details, indoor/outdoor spaces and quality of the home for an award submission and to use in their marketing. The home represents the top specification that Monster Homes offers and is a fine example of the quality of workmanship that they are known for. The property is a 4 bedroom luxury entertainer and LP Commercial Photography loved capturing this gorgeous home highlighting the finer details, natural light through the home and the stunning design elements of throughout, in particular the indoor/outdoor living. Monster homes were very happy with the final result that LP Commercial Photography provided to their brief, quoting the below:

“LP Commercial Photography have captured our new display home perfectly. The enthusiasm to shoot was refreshing and is reflected in the great images provided. Em has gone above and beyond to get as many shots as possible to suit many different purposes — allowing us to expand our social media presence and elevate our collateral. Images like these are priceless.”

Images Uses as Identified by the Client

Before all commercial photoshoots, LP Commercial Photography requests a brief and end usage of the images so we can photograph appropriately with wides, close ups, detail shots, dusk features, attention to certain elements in the home. Monster Homes identified the following usage outputs:

    • The spaces as a whole - living area Points of difference

    • Cement wall to entry

    • Solar system in office/garage

    • Pool day bed

    • Bar area leading to the outdoor dining area

    • Upstairs living/bar

Our client, Monster Homes, explains the home design as below:

For us, this display home was a big step into the right direction. It allows us to show our potential clients what we can do and outline the quality workmanship that we pride ourselves on. Planning the display home was a fun challenge that had the whole office brainstorming to come up with the best trends that would be sure to bring that wow factor. Some of the main factors that this house is built upon are indoor-outdoor living, natural light, designed for both the entertainer and the family, and simplicity in design. We chose to keep a consistent palette of woods, concrete, black fixtures and white walls, tying into the modern-day trend without making the space too dark – it works quite well in our eyes.

Building the Future for Remote Communities: Brisbane Time Lapse, Drone & Videography

BUILDING THE FUTURE FOR REMOTE COMMUNITIES

Brisbane Time Lapse, Drone & Videography

I love where our job takes us…. Travelling around Australia and beyond photographing and filming for our clients in such a wide variety of locations, capturing brand stories and getting to know some incredible people along the way.

We were recently commissioned by Fulton Hogan, an expert in airport pavement design, construction and maintenance, to film the Weipa Airport Resurfacing Project which was 100% self-performed by Fulton Hogan.

Located in far North of Queensland on the Cape York Peninsula, Fulton Hogan were engaged to resurface Weipa airport runway as well as build a new aircraft apron. The installation of aeronautical ground lighting was also included.  We were commissioned to capture the project through a range of mediums such as time lapse, drone, videography and stills to produce the end piece: a documentative video of the project.

This remote settlement is 2,500kms from Brisbane and 827km’s from Cairns. Its location makes it a major logistical challenge to get equipment and manpower on site even before you start considering the technical difficulties of the job.

However, for Fulton Hogan’s specialist airport team, it was simply a matter of taking everything in their stride and making sure they trucked in all they would need, including their massive transportable asphalt plant.

For the uninitiated it is akin to a giant multi-vehicle transformer, that arrives as a series of large articulated truck trailers and turns into an asphalt plant capable of producing 300 tonnes of black top an hour with its own portable laboratory where technicians and scientists continually check samples to ensure the plant maintains the highest possible quality product for resurfacing the runway.

For LP Commercial Photography, it meant flying me, seven camera bodies, time-lapse slider and controller and an assortment of lenses, gimbal, tripods, microphones and everything in the kitchen sink off to Weipa to live on a local mining camp for a week. A one-man mission to capture as many of the FH team’s different techniques and processes as possible to create a short documentary film on the project both as a record of the work and also for use for future marketing endeavours.

The brief was to supply a range of stills and video from the project and also capture the surrounding community.

Far North Queensland was a new experience, on the challenging side was the heat and wind that blew constant clouds of dust from the surrounding landscape across the airport. I still have a camera where the grip is slightly tinted red from the dust that I just can’t get out of the little grooves in the rubber.

But on the plus side was the incredible FH team on the job and the local people, all of whom were great to work with, friendly, inviting and always interested in what was going on.

One of my favourite moments was creating the last time lapse section of video, with the sunsetting over the sea.

The sequence took about 3 hours to film and while I was sitting there manning the cameras I watched a father teaching his two young sons - who probably weren’t yet into double digits - how to fish with a spear. Then as the sky started to darken they left leaving me alone at the spot.

Then a few minutes later a ute came racing over to me…. not sure what to expect, a man jumped out breathless dangling a massive fish…. “I saw you over here with your cameras…. I just caught this and nobody is going to believe me…. Please can you take a photo and send it to me!!!”

He then left and I was alone again as dusk turned to the dark blue of twilight and it began to get seriously dark. As I waited for the time-lapse sequence to finish I glanced over at the “Warning Crocodiles” signs and thought. “You know what, I wonder if crocs are active at night now I’m alone here...” OK, I’ll admit it was not the best time to check that type of information…. particularly when wikipedia on my phone told me they were most active hunters at night…. you have never seen a set of cameras packed away as quickly as I did that night while all the time scanning a torch over the ocean to see if there was a glint of eye reflection on the water line!!!

When I worked as a photojournalist my cameras took me on so many different adventures, experiences and locations. Thirty-three years later and working in commercial photography it’s great to know that they still do. Weipa Airport what can I say, a great shoot, great people and a beautiful location. Thanks for having us.

Andy
