When our client, Intermedia, embarked on their inaugural ProPack Packaging Forum in Sydney, they sought a visual storytelling partner to capture the events essence. As seasoned photographers and videographers, we were tasked with documenting every facet of this industry-leading gathering.

A Multi-faceted Approach

The ProPack Packaging Forum was a dynamic event featuring a diverse range of presentations, from traditional PowerPoint slides to intimate fireside chats. We meticulously captured each speaker, ensuring that every insightful moment was preserved. 

Given the significance of an esteemed guest speaker from Italy, we prioritised capturing his presence and expertise. Our teams dedication to capturing high-quality event photography and videography ensured that every detail, from keynote speeches to networking breaks, was documented.

Behind-the-Scenes Efficiency

To meet the demanding schedule of the ProPack Packaging Forum, we arrived bright and early, flying from Brisbane at 5am to be on-site by 8:30am. Our efficient workflow allowed us to capture multiple angles of the venue and interview attendees during breaks. These candid interviews provided valuable insights into the conference experience and added a personal touch to the final video.

Throughout the event, we maintained open communication with the client. By sharing progress updates and seeking feedback, we ensured that the final deliverables exceeded expectations.

The LP team came together to execute an epic night of imagery and video of this prestigious event. CAPTURING TAB’S Events WITH PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

LP Commercial Photography was commissioned by TAB to capture a range of both photo and video content across their South East Queensland events. The LP team tailored its approach to meet the specifications outlined in various event briefs, allowing us to deliver the best quality content for each occasion.

The perfect day to be on a private chartered boat capturing all the action of the TAB event!

For this job, the LP Commercial Photography team had the pleasure of operating within the creative framework set forth by TAB's marketing team. The team highlighted guests arriving, event styling and the private chartered boat, with the deliverables of Andy creating a selection of great photographs for marketing and social media while Melanie captured and curated a video and reel of the day's events.

Magic millions Stradbroke event day vip suite and dome

This was a huge event day for TAB and LP Commercial Photography's Andy and Mel on photo and video across two main features of the event:

  1. First up in the VIP Suite, they worked to capture event setup, food and beverage, table setting and furniture theming, as well as the view over the race and track from the suite.

  2. And secondly, documenting the TAB Dome and setup which included a DJ, brand ambassadors and betting screens inside the dome.

    During this part of the event, LP's team worked to capture candid as well as set-up photo moments, people dancing and having a great time, people on their phones, and wider 'faceless' big crowd shots along with, wherever possible, TAB/Sky branding shots in the background.

The Faces of Radio - Commercial Radio Australia’s conference, Radio Alive and the Commercial Radio Awards for 2018.

CLIENT: Commercial Radio Australia

BRIEF: To capture all aspects of the Commercial Radio Conference Radio Alive and The Australian Commercial Radio Awards including all speakers, sponsors stands and activities, general networking and socials, and atmospheric photographs at the conference, Award wall images, stage coverage, crowd coverage socials and red carpet images at the awards.

SPECIAL REQUESTS: Images are to be processed and uploaded throughout the event for media distribution and use (approximately 1000 images). All remaining images need to be uploaded within 24 hours of the event for attendees to view and download.

LP COMMERCIAL TEAM: Four Senior photographers representing more than 70 years experience in the industry. LP Commercial Owners and lead photographers Andrew Jarvie and Emily Clarke and Dan Gray and Simon Harrington.

OUTCOME: Multiple national and international media hits across Australian industry and mainstream newspapers and magazines including online exploitation by media and radio outlets.

WELCOME TO TWO DAYS OF THE BEST OF RADIO

October is an interesting month. For my son it’s all about creating weird fancy dress costumes and getting ready for a ridiculous amount of lollies on Halloween, for some of my friends it’s about bratwurst, schnitzels and too much German beer at Oktoberfest (I’m not mentioning names but you know who you are J). Here at Life Portraits and LP Commercial Photography it’s about prepping for one of our largest event gigs of the year, two days of fast paced, shutter clicking celebrations at the Commercial Radio Conference Radio Alive and the star-studded Australian Commercial Radio Awards.

Photographically what do the ACRAS mean for us? A four person team, nearly 1000 press images processed, captioned, uploaded and delivered to the media as the events are taking place, roughly another 3,000 images processed and delivered electronically to the client for distribution to attendees, sponsors etc within 24 hours of the event closing.

Event photography isn’t for everyone. Many underestimate what the job entails. It’s not just a case of snapping a few socials then getting a couple of speakers on a stage. Your images have to capture a mood and feeling of the event. You are constantly looking for moments to capture, unscripted as well as scripted, and shooting multiple styles of images for the many audiences a larger event attracts:

There are the fun and interesting shots for attendees to share with their friends and colleagues on social media. Good shots of the speakers and participants that can be gifted to them to use in their profiles and portfolios and online marketing. Images that the client and event organisers can use to market the event to future attendees. Sponsor shots to show that their decision to back the event or have a trade stand there was money well spent and to help the organisers to market to sponsors in future years. And then there are the press shots. Images which have to satisfy both the various local, national and international print and online news hounds while at the same time projecting the image of the event demanded by the client’s public relations specialists.

On larger events there are also the technical difficulties of shooting in multiple and often complicated lighting conditions from natural light to complicate stage lighting, from near darkness to full studio conditions and often jumping between them all at a seconds notice.

And lastly, there is the issue of how long you have to turn the images round. If there is media interest then images have to be online minutes after being taken.  If press photographers are at the event it is our responsibility to make sure that our pictures hit the newsdesks before other freelance media photographers to give a better chance of the client’s images being used.

Not all events demand all of these things. Many conferences and awards ceremonies are much more about internal distribution of images inside companies or offerings to specialist media with longer lead times of up to a month.

But the Commercial Radio Australia weekend demands it all and while it is a tough weekend, we love it!!!

For me, a former daily press photographer, events like the Radio Alive conference and the ACRAS bring back that adrenaline rush of media work. There is nowhere to hide, your images have to be right first time and there is no re-staging a shot. You either capture the moment or you don’t and all too often not capturing that moment is simply not an option. That pressure drives you to succeed, and that is a brilliant rush.

Commercial Radio Australia is also a dream client to work with. They are loyal to their suppliers which has seen us working on the awards for a number of years now. They were my client a good few years before Emily and I joined forces and created the LP brand. Yes they demand a high level of quality and responsiveness but their team works harder than any of their suppliers to deliver one of Australia’s biggest star-studded awards ceremonies. It is only right that they expect and demand the best from us. That drive in their team also means we know at all times what is expected from us which actually makes delivery easier.

The job itself is actually too big for Emily and I to handle alone. But this is where our policy of working cooperatively with other photographers comes in and allows us to tackle jobs of all sizes. We have a group of people we can call on to work under our brand to help us on large or interstate projects and we in turn return the favour and work under their brand whenever they need.

In this instance we are lucky enough to have two great friends and great photographers join our team, Dan Gray and Simon Harrington, both of whom are highly experienced photographers with years of running their own businesses and delivering for clients.

This in turn has a fantastic impact for the client as it means every person on our team is highly experienced…. At this year’s ACRAS we had nearly 70 years of combined skills and knowledge in photography and event coverage in play. We don’t fill our numbers by bringing in in-experienced trainees and students we simply put in place the best team we can for each and every event.

So how did we organise this year’s coverage? 

Thursday: Dan, Emily and I flew into Melbourne and spent the evening checking gear, ensuring batteries were charged and cameras were time synced and lightroom galleries and captioning were prepared.

Friday 7am: Arrive at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre and we are off, day one, Radio Alive 2018.

Conference day was fast paced but fairly straight forward. Dan and I were on cameras, Emily was stationed in the press room on the laptop processing, captioning and uploading images for the media. Dan and I would regularly swap out of the different conference rooms so at least one of us was always shooting and the other was feeding cards of images back to Emily.

Emily had the absolutely crucial job of being the lynchpin of our operation during the conference and while we tease her about being a bossy boots the reality is her amazingly organised and direct way of working is always a god send in these situations. 

She was the only one seeing all our images so as well as processing our images to make them consistent, selecting the best ones to meet the media and client needs, captioning them and uploading them, she would feed us instructions throughout the day. “We need more candids during networking times”, “we have enough audience shots now concentrate on the speakers”,  “highlights are blowing out a little under that stage lighting knock your exposure back a fraction”, “we’ve had a specific request for a shot of….”, and so it went and all the time she would be processing and captioning and uploading hundreds of images during the day.

This constant flow of feedback then allowed Dan and I to fully concentrate on the moments in the conference rooms and networking areas and keep our eyes peeled for those magic moments.

At 6.30pm we were cameras down and ready to enjoy a couple of after event drinks happy that a good job had been done.

Saturday morning Simon flew in from Sydney and after a leisurely morning we started to get ready, kit cleaned and prepped, batteries fully charged, images from the previous day backed up and secure, cards cleared and formatted, seven cameras time synced and a pre-event meeting to discuss responsibilities and shooting tactics and we walk ourselves through the evening that is coming, the big one, the Australian Commercial Radio awards. 

We arrive at 3pm, two hours to go before the red carpet opens. Dan and Emily set up studio lights around the winners wall to ensure crisp well lit images of all 90 or so award winners as they come off stage. Simon starts taking room set up pictures and images for sponsors etc. I start getting ready for the VIP red carpet images and be on standby should any of the celebrities arrive early so we can get going on the red carpet as fast as possible.

The event kicks off at 5pm. Emily and I are up first. I shoot the red carpet and organise the press photographers as we capture images of the radio stars and their partners, tight shots, face shots, full length gown shots, the works. Most arrive late and at 6pm there is a massive rush to get everything done while I constantly pass images to Emily for her to process, caption and get online for the media. 

6pm the event is already underway. Simon is up and working like a trojan capturing the crowds entering and the first performer on stage while I wrap up on the red carpet. 6.15pm and the red carpet is finished. I abandon Emily to the uploads and processing while I head into the main room to cover the stage and crowd for the rest of the night with Simon. 

6.30pm Emily has finished processing and uploading around 100 red carpet pictures and is already with Dan at the studio award wall set-up as the first of the award winners are already coming out with their ACRA microphone statue, proudly smiling at their win.

The night disappears in a blur. As Emily and Dan work solidly through the night in a rhythm of winners, images, processing, uploading. Simon and I cover inside as the performers sing their hearts out, Andrew Hansen & Chris Taylor from The Chaser entertain (and roast) the crowd as hosts and some of Australia’s best comedians and radio stars and experts present and receive their awards. Simon and I continually shoot, and he covers me when I put cameras down every now and then to grab the laptop I’ve stashed at the back of the room to offload cards and process and upload suitable media pictures from all the action on stage, adding to Emily’s press pictures from the VIP Red Carpet and Award Wall.

Despite a full night, 90 awards, three on stage bands and interludes, the amazing team at Commercial Radio Australia finish the event bang on time and by 11pm we are all in the media room wrapping up. I’m putting the last of the inside images online in our press galleries. Emily has amazingly finished getting every award winner picture captioned and online and the press are already picking them up with our images being used by online media that night. Dan is breaking down the equipment and studio and Simon is popping in and out snapping the last of the socials as the final people head to the after-show parties.

We head back to the hotel apartment, order pizzas and swap war stories from the evening in that wonderful post event, fatigue ridden, warm glow in a wonderful moment of camaraderie… then realise we forgot one important thing…. to stock the fridge with beer that morning… Note for next year.

The next day (Sunday) Dan and Simon sleep-in, their ACRA weekend has come to an end and they will return to Sydney at a leisurely pace after relaxing in Melbourne. Emily and I are up and away flying back to Brisbane and by 11am I’m home with 10,000 images to sort through, cull, edit and upload to the client by 9am Monday morning. 

I get everything underway and thankfully Emily managed to find time during the conference to process most of those pictures or at least set up editing presets which I can now just copy. That alone saves me a couple of hours. But then disaster strikes, a Brisbane thunderstorm knocks out power and my NBN line keeps failing. I keep working on the laptop until the battery fails. I’ve already phoned round friends to find somewhere I can move my editing suite to if I don’t get power back on but thankfully it’s not required in the end as the power cut only lasts a few hours. By 3am Monday morning the images are sorted, processed and uploading begins. Later that day we send all the images on a hard drive to the client as a second back up to the digital uploads.

In return the client sends us a lovely email and a list of all the national and regional newspapers, magazines and online news outlets that have already downloaded and used our images.

…and with that the ACRAS And Radio Alive are over for another year and we are already starting to look forward to 2019.

PRESTIGIOUS EVENT, TO MARKETING GOLD

Often in photography, there are hard lines between the different styles and genres….

Event photography is about speed, reaction, capturing candid moments, adopting a reportage style of shooting from situations you have little control over and you must capture the moment first time, every time.

Commercial photography is very structured and planning is the key to a successful photoshoot. Every image is a creation of design and intent and you have control over lighting and subject matter and you may take the same image over and over again with micro differences to get the best possible shot.

Architectural and interior photography is all about taking your time, judging the light and watching how it plays across your subject, leading lines, symmetry and careful consideration.

There are the days when the lines between these blur and vanish, those can be some of the most exciting. In this instance, you have to stay on your toes to capture commercial and marketing quality imagery on the fly in circumstances you have no control over.

We were put to the test with these blurred lines recently when photographing for Lumiere Events & Culinary at the Breakfast Creek Lifestyle Precinct in Brisbane. An incredible multi-storey feature building of glass and steel containing a Mercedes dealership, an event venue and the ‘soon to open’ range of lifestyle led businesses from a cookery school to a Yoga studio.

The amazing Lumiere Events, Shannon and Clare Kellam and their incredible team, are in charge of all the events taking place at the precinct. They booked us to photograph a prestigious champagne event partially to record the occasion but also to capture images which show a true event in full swing but with the intent for the imagery to be also used to market the premises.

The challenge was to get those perfect marketing shots but in a scenario where you could not reset or take time to redo images or interact or in any way hinder the event taking place. Everything had to be as was, no additional lighting or light shaping equipment but photography at its purest, a camera, a lens and someone to take the images.

For me, with a press photography background, this kind of reportage project is what I live for. What more could I ask for than a great location, a great event and a great client to shoot for.

Brief:

In 2014 the drinks industry came together in a one of a kind event in Australia, Top Shelf. The ALIAS was held in the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building, one of the oldest exhibition spaces of its kind in the world. Organisers Intermedia flew Andy down to Melbourne to cover the two day event including the conference and social events.

The imagery is delivered with a one day turnaround or at the event to get out the most important social images to the client’s audience. This is done by uploading to an online gallery distributed to press and to the client. This is a fast paced working environment but a lot of fun, which we’ve been photographing for many years now.

An Industry Celebration With Style: Australian Liquor Industry Awards - Brisbane Event Photography

What do you get when you cross the Redbull motorcycle stunt team, a bevy of sporting and TV celebrities, cheerleaders, Luna Park, and the leaders in the Australian liquor industry? One hell of a party!!

Every year for almost a decade Andrew has been lucky enough to be the official photographer for the ALIA (Australian Liquor Industry Awards) in Sydney.

Every year there is a different theme and many locations have been used but here are a selection from one of his favourite events.

The images are used by Event organisers publishing house Intermedia in their range of magazines as well as gifts to sponsors and event attendees.

Brief: Capture the mood of the day, attendees enjoying the event with Somersby’s products, the on field action and Somersby’s VIP guests

LP Staff: Single Photographer

Equipment: Four Canon Cameras, two set up for socials and general event coverage and two Eos 1’s with super telephotos for capturing sporting action on the field.

Special request: On site processing and delivery required to allow social media influencers present as VIP guests to have a range of shots to issue of themselves and the event immediately to various social media outlets.

Event photography is an area of our business I love. 

While we are a Brisbane corporate and commercial photography business we are lucky enough to have clients that would prefer to fly us to their events across Australia than risk using photographers they don’t know or have no experience working with.

Having such a varied client list means we get to experience so many different industries and learn so much. Sometimes you hear world class speakers talk about things you had never even considered, other times you get to hear fellow small businesses talk about their successes and get to take that information away with you to help shape your own business journey.

Sometimes you just get to be involved in an utterly amazing spectacle and have a great day out doing what you love, taking photographs.

One such job was covering Somersby’s involvement in the Polo in the City event in Brisbane. 

There are few things as pleasurable as a balmy and sunny day in Brisbane, good drinks, good company and a fantastic and exciting sport to watch.

There was also a lot of hard work ensuring all aspects of the day was captured and the steps counter on my watch told me I had a very good day as I constantly walked the arena capturing all the action on field and off but what a brilliant day with a wonderful client and a truly great spectacle.

LP Commercial Photography photographed and videoed the Renaissance Periodization Strength Fitness Seminar in Brisbane over two days, June 15-16 2019. The health and fitness event featured doctors from America including Mike Israetel, James Hoffmann, Gabrielle Fundaro, and Melissa Davis presenting up to date, evidence based health and fitness information to optimise your training performance, physique & go in depth into the mental aspect of dieting & just as importantly, post-dieting.

We captured a variety of stills photography, candid event photography, group photography, speaker portraits as well as behind the scenes on interviews. This was then teamed with videography of the day, speaker interviews, testimonials from people in the audience, environment footage to create a social media video to promote and reflect on the event’s success. These images and video will be used to promote the event for future years.

Brief: Brisbane Event Photography

LP Commercial Photography was commissioned by the French Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry FACCI to photograph the annual Bastille Day Business Breakfast hosted at the Sofitel Brisbane Central with guest Speaker Pat Howard.

We successfully delivered a large gallery of images that was based off a formal brief from the client which was ticked off on the day to ensure all details were captured, including; the entry networking, details, sponsors posed and candid with attendees, room atmosphere, breakfast details, whole room documentation, speakers for the day and group photos. The two hour event was a great success an the images were delivered with a fast turn around by that afternoon.

Focusing On Getting The Perfect Images On A Staff Day Out... Brisbane Event and Commercial Photography

Call me an old petrol head, but nothing quite gets the old heart pumping as the sound of a race car engine screaming from its low rumbling base to its high revving fury.

So when our Sunshine Coast-based high-tech aerospace engineering client Helimods asked me if I could do some documentary and event photography of their team spending the day with a GT3 Race car they sponsor (with their intern Harri Jones as the driver!)… how could I say no!

On a blistering hot Queensland summer day with the track temperature in the mid to high 50’s we all got together for an exciting day of roaring engines and exhaust fumes.

Internal events like these are all about building that feeling of camaraderie between staff, boosting morale and about rewarding and giving back to staff for all their hard work by giving them an experience they otherwise would not have.

Helimods excels in this area. They are an incredibly hard-working company where performance is critical. Their work goes sometimes quite literally on the front line in the worlds of defence, rescue and emergency services. But despite the never-ending pressure of performance there are few companies I have worked with or visited where every member of staff seems to be on board for the challenge and where professional and non-professional camaraderie is shared across departments to create a very focussed and happy working environment.

It’s one of the reasons we love taking professional advertising, marketing and social media images for Helimods. They are incredible clients and simply do things properly.

But for the photographer at internal staff events it is really critical not to get lazy or underestimate the images being taken. It’s about so much more than just taking quick snaps of people having fun.

When undertaking event photography for internal events, for any client it’s very important to understand how the images will be used and that knowledge must then shape how you photograph the day.

Yes of course you are there to take professional quality photographs for the team, recording their day and the fun and excitement. But the images will also be used by the business in their social media feeds to present themselves; perhaps as a great place to work with friendly happy staff to help in recruitment and staff retention; as a go getter business promoting in a soft way its links back to the original sponsorship and the aspirational qualities of that sponsorship; underlining it’s core values to a wider business community; showing both competitors and potential clients that this is a company that treats it’s staff right and is a good company to be doing business with;… and so on.

Beyond that though, the individual staff members will also use those images in their own social media channels showing what a great and exciting day they had…. the classic “this was my office today…” post or just in excited outbursts to friends and family.

In a world of ever-expanding social networking you never know where your photographs will end up, with, or who they will be put in front of. As photographers we have to be mindful of this to ensure the business or company and it’s values are represented correctly. A poorly structured image with staff not appropriately dressed, safely issues being present or even having the wrong PPE can easily end up in the wrong hands and have some serious consequences.

As a result, it’s not enough for a photographer to think: “oh it is just an internal event so let’s just get some nice shots of everyone having fun” we have to treat all events with an eye for attention to detail.

Yes it is all about staff having fun, but the clients brand equity and values must be reflected in every shot so how are the staff in your images having fun and is the behaviour acceptable, are the images showing safe behaviour with appropriate PPE or other procedures being followed despite the team having fun. Is there branding in the shots, are staff presented in clean cut fashion if that is important to the brand. All these factors and more have to be taken into account to produce a set of images that not only capture a great fun day out for the team, reflect the photographers style, creativity and quality but also provide real marketing image value for the client.

PRESTIGIOUS EVENT, TO MARKETING GOLD

Often in photography, there are hard lines between the different styles and genres….

Event photography is about speed, reaction, capturing candid moments, adopting a reportage style of shooting from situations you have little control over and you must capture the moment first time, every time.

Commercial photography is very structured and planning is the key to a successful photoshoot. Every image is a creation of design and intent and you have control over lighting and subject matter and you may take the same image over and over again with micro differences to get the best possible shot.

Architectural and interior photography is all about taking your time, judging the light and watching how it plays across your subject, leading lines, symmetry and careful consideration.

There are the days when the lines between these blur and vanish, those can be some of the most exciting. In this instance, you have to stay on your toes to capture commercial and marketing quality imagery on the fly in circumstances you have no control over.

We were put to the test with these blurred lines recently when photographing for Lumiere Events & Culinary at the Breakfast Creek Lifestyle Precinct in Brisbane. An incredible multi-storey feature building of glass and steel containing a Mercedes dealership, an event venue and the ‘soon to open’ range of lifestyle led businesses from a cookery school to a Yoga studio.

The amazing Lumiere Events, Shannon and Clare Kellam and their incredible team, are in charge of all the events taking place at the precinct. They booked us to photograph a prestigious champagne event partially to record the occasion but also to capture images which show a true event in full swing but with the intent for the imagery to be also used to market the premises.

The challenge was to get those perfect marketing shots but in a scenario where you could not reset or take time to redo images or interact or in any way hinder the event taking place. Everything had to be as was, no additional lighting or light shaping equipment but photography at its purest, a camera, a lens and someone to take the images.

For me, with a press photography background, this kind of reportage project is what I live for. What more could I ask for than a great location, a great event and a great client to shoot for.
